Description

• Cultivate fastidious and nonfastidious organisms using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Columbia Broth Base (Dehydrated)
• In 1969, Morello and Ellner described the use of Columbia Broth for the recovery of microorganisms from blood cultures 1
• The formulation was based on Ellner's Columbia Blood Agar Base with increased cysteine to improve isolation of bacteria from blood specimens 2
• This medium provided superior recovery rates of Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli , viridans streptococci and enterococci from blood cultures as compared to the results obtained using tryptic soy broth
• Cultivate fastidious and nonfastidious organisms using Columbia Broth Base
• Improved Recovery: L-cysteine provides for improved recovery of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms from blood
• This medium contains casein and meat peptones that provide amino acids, peptides and nitrogenous substances necessary for growth
• Yeast extract supplies B-complex vitamins
• Dextrose is added as a carbohydrate source of energy
• L-cysteine provides for improved recovery of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms from blood
• Tris is added as a buffer and the medium contains magnesium and iron salts which are beneficial for growth
