Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ KF Strep Agar

Description

• Selectively isolate and enumerate fecal streptococci using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ KF Strep Agar (Dehydrated)
• The medium is supplemented with triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC)
• In 1961, Kenner formulated KF Strep Agar to detect fecal streptococci in polluted surface waters 1
• This medium is recommended to detect and enumerate enterococci in water, foods, and dairy products in Compendium of Methods for the Microbiological Examination of Foods, Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, and Standard Methods for the Examination of Dairy Products 2
• Since enterococci are host specific and  survive only a short interval outside their natural habitats, their detection in surface waters may help in identifying the source of pollution 3
• Enterococci survive in microenvironments unfavorable to coliforms 4 so are used as an index of sanitary quality in the dairy industry

• Yeast extract enhances the growth as it is a source of B-complex vitamins
• Sodium chloride maintains osmotic equilibrium
• Maltose and lactose are fermentable carbohydrates present in the medium
• Brom cresol purple is an indicator dye
• Triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) is reduced by enterococci to its formazan derivatives resulting in deep red colored colonies
• Agar is a solidifying agent
