Description

  • Differentiate Enterobacteriaceae from group D streptococci using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Heart Infusion Broth with 6.5% NaCl (with Brom Cresol Purple) (Salt Broth)
  • Facklam demonstrated that the differentiation of enterococci and nonenterococcal group D streptococci was more accurate on using Heart Infusion Broth with 6.5% NaCl Modified with Indicator in combination with bile and esculin agar 1,2
  • This media differentiates Enterobacteriaceae from group D streptococci
  • Enterococci grow in the presence of 6.5% NaCl and utilize dextrose in the medium
  • This medium contains beef heart infusion and casein peptone that supply nitrogenous compounds and amino acids required for the growth of streptococci
  • Dextrose is an energy source
  • Bacterial growth is enhanced by yeast extract which supplies essential B vitamins
  • Ready to use – Continence of prepared media
  • Selective media – Sodium chloride (6.5%) interferes with the membrane permeability and osmotic equilibrium and inhibits the growth of salt-intolerant bacteria Easy to interpret - Enterococci grow in the presence of 6.5% NaCl and utilize dextrose in the medium
  • The metabolism of dextrose produces acid, which causes the indicator, brom cresol purple, to change from purple to yellow.
