• Biochem/physiol Actions: β-ureidopropionase is an enzyme encoded by the UPB1 gene in humans. It is the third enzyme of the pyrimidine degradation pathway and catalyzes the conversion of N-carbamyl-β-alanine and N-carbamyl-β-aminoisobutyric acid to β-alanine and β-aminoisobutyric acid, ammonia and CO2. The enzyme catalyzes the final step in the 5-FU catabolic pathway. The gene variants may contribute to the development of 5-FU-related toxicity in some fluoropyrimidine (FP)-treated patients. The gene deficiency is an inborn error of the pyrimidine degradation pathway and affects the cleavage of N-carbamyl-β-alanine and N-carbamyl-β-aminoisobutyric acid.
