• Biochem/physiol Actions: HK1 (Hexokinase 1) encodes a hexokinase protein consisting of a porin-binding domain at the N-terminal end. It is majorly involved in the glucose metabolic pathway. It is expressed in the photoreceptor inner section, outer plexiform layer, inner nuclear layer, inner plexiform layer, and ganglion cell layer of the human retina. It provides the energy for maintaining the metabolic activity of retina. In the mitochondria, HK1 functions as a pro-survival factor to inhibit TNF-induced apoptotic signals. A missense mutation in hexokinase 1 (HK1) causes an autosomal dominant disorder, retinitis pigmentosa. It has been reported that porin-binding domain of HK1 actively participates in the mitochondrial integrity.
