Description
- General description: IgM antibodies are present as pentamers in the serum and are produced in response to antigens.
- Application: Anti-Human IgM (μ-chain specific) antibody produced in goat has been used in enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies are the primary ones to be produced in response to antigen. They bind with low affinity but exhibit a broad specificity to a variety of antigens. IgM constitutes 15% of adult immunoglobulins. IgM is important for fetal and neonatal host defenses for several reasons. IgM molecule efficiently activates classical pathway of complement. Its pentameric structure helps in accomodating multivalent ligand binding. IgM has a prominent role in clearance of invading microorganisms from serum.
- Physical form: Solution in 0.01 M phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.4, containing 15 mM sodium azide
