Description

  • General description: GIP, also known as a gastric inhibitory polypeptide, or glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 17q12-q21. It is synthesized in and secreted from K cells in the intestinal epithelium. GIP secretion from the gastrointestinal tract plays a major role in glucose homeostasis. It stimulates insulin secretion from pancreatic β cells after oral ingestion of nutrients. In addition, GIP also promotes insulin biosynthesis, and β-cell proliferation and alleviates beta-cell apoptosis GIP also aids in fat metabolism by stimulating triglyceride synthesis in adipocytes. Elevated levels of GIP may lead to obesity and hyperinsulinemia. This Human GIP (total) ELISA is used to measure & quantify GIP levels in Metabolism & Endocrine research.
