- Biochem/physiol Actions: Procalcitonin or calcitonin related polypeptide a is a 116-amino acid precursor of calcitonin. It is secreted by monocytes activated by endotoxins or pathogens. The protein is a biomarker for sepsis and bacterial infections. Procalcitonin has been associated with hepatocyte dysfunction.[1][2]
