- SIAT8-A is a single-pass type II membrane protein that is strongly expressed in melanoma cell lines, adult and fetal brain, and to a lesser extent in adult and fetal lung
- It is involved in the production of gangliosides GD3 and GT3 from GM3
- It catalyzes the transfer of sialic acid from CMP-sialic acid to GM3 to produce GD3 and GT3 in a successive manner
- It is also involved in the pathway protein glycosylation
- SIAT8-A contains a cytoplasmic domain (aa 1-29); a transmembrane domain (aa 30-48); and a lumenal domain (aa 49-356)
- Two isoforms of SIAT8-A have been described that are produced by alternative splicing
