  • Tropomyosin-1 is a cytoskeletal protein that associates with F-actin stress fibers
  • It binds to actin filaments in muscle and non-muscle cells and plays a central role, in association with the troponin complex, in the calcium dependent regulation of vertebrate striated muscle contraction
  • It stabilizes actin filaments and regulates the interaction of actin filament with other actin-binding proteins

  • Tropomyosin-1 is a homodimeric protein, but can form heterodimer of an alpha (TPM1, TPM3, or TPM4) and a beta (TPM2) chain
  • Mutations in TPM1 gene have been linked to cardiomyopathy characterized by ventricular hypertrophy and ventricular dilation and impaired systolic function that results in congestive heart failure and arrhythmia
