- Tropomyosin-1 is a cytoskeletal protein that associates with F-actin stress fibers
- It binds to actin filaments in muscle and non-muscle cells and plays a central role, in association with the troponin complex, in the calcium dependent regulation of vertebrate striated muscle contraction
- It stabilizes actin filaments and regulates the interaction of actin filament with other actin-binding proteins
- In non-muscle cells is implicated in stabilizing cytoskeleton actin filaments
- Tropomyosin-1 is a homodimeric protein, but can form heterodimer of an alpha (TPM1, TPM3, or TPM4) and a beta (TPM2) chain
- Mutations in TPM1 gene have been linked to cardiomyopathy characterized by ventricular hypertrophy and ventricular dilation and impaired systolic function that results in congestive heart failure and arrhythmia
- Ten different isoforms of Tropomyosin-1 have been described that are produced by alternative splicing.
