- GAPDH is comprised of four ∽36kDa subunits with a total molecular weight of ∽146kDa
- Besides functioning as a glycolytic enzyme in cytoplasm, mammalian GAPDH is also involved in a great number of intracellular processes such as membrane fusion, microtubule bundling, phosphotransferase activity, nuclear RNA export, DNA replication and DNA repair
- Recently, findings have been made concerning the role of GAPDH in differentpathologies including prostate cancer progression, programmed neuronal cell death, and age-related neuronal diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease and Huntington’s Disease
- While GAPDH is constitutively expressed in almost all tissues at high levels, there are some physiological factors such as hypoxia and diabetes that increase GAPDH expression in certain cell types.
