- General description: α-Tocopherol acetate is a semisynthetic acetate ester of naturally occurring α-tocopherol.
- Application: (+)-α-Tocopherol acetate has been used: as a supplement in the human embryonic kidney cells (HEK 293) to assess its impact on cell growth[1]as a component of Dulbecco′s Modified Eagle Medium/Nutrient Mixture F-12 (DMEM/F12) for immortalized chondrocyte cell line[2] as a component of serum-free medium for human colon tissue organ culture[3]to test its antioxidant effects on cow articular chondrocytes[4]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: α-Tocopherol acetate or vitamin E-acetate has antioxidant properties and reduces lipid peroxidation.[5] However, vitamin E acetate on pyrolysis leads to the generation of carcinogens like alkenes and benzenes.[6]
- Caution: Since the M.P. is about 25 °C this preparation is usually an oil. Does not air oxidize.
