Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ BactiDrop™ Kovac's Indole

• Determine of the ability of microorganisms, primarily Enterobacteriaceae, to split indole from the tryptophan molecule with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ BactiDrop™ Kovac's Indole reagent
• Earlier tests to confirm indole production required a xylene extraction procedure to detect small quantities of indole produced from the breakdown of tryptophan
• Kovac's utilized amyl alcohol instead of ethyl alcohol to bypass the extraction procedure involved in the Ehrlich-Beohme reagent1
• Gadebusch and Gabriel reported that substitution of isoamyl alcohol resulted in greater stability of Kovac's reagent2
• Tryptophanases are intracellular enzymes that mediate indole production by hydrolysing the amino acid tryptophan
• Indole combines with dimethyl-aminobenzaldehyde to form a red compound
