  • In 1989, Curtis described a selective and differential medium to isolate L
  • monocytogenes from specimens with mixed flora
  • This is known as the Oxford Agar 1
  • Lee and McClain developed a selective medium to isolate L
  • monocytogenes from food products using colistin and moxalactam 2 in place of the original selective agents 2
  • This medium is recommended by the American Public Health Association (APHA) for the recovery of L
  • monocytogenes from meat and dairy products 3,4
  • Listeria monocytogenes is a common contaminant in raw milk, meats, vegetables, seafood and in the food processing environment
  • The ability to isolate the organism has been impeded in the past by lack of an effective selective medium, as Listeria monocytogenes can be easily overgrown by competing flora
  • Use Oxford Modified Agar Base for selective isolation and detection of Listeria monocytogenes from food and environmental samples

  • monocytogenes hydrolyzes esculin to produce esculetin which combines with ferric ammonium citrate to form a black precipitate in the medium that surrounds the colonies
  • Lithium chloride and colistin act as selective agents
  • Moxalactam Selective Supplement (REF R450551) is added to the medium to increase selectivity
