  • Poly(rC)-binding protein 2 (UniProt: Q15366; also known as Alpha-CP2, Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein E2, hnRNP E2) is encoded by the PCBP2 gene (Gene ID: 5094) in human
  • PCBP2 belongs to a class of cellular proteins that bind to poly(C) stretches of both RNA and DNA and has been detected in all tissues studied
  • PCBP2 shuttles between the nucleus and cytoplasm and exerts its impact on RNA processing and mRNA expression through sequence-specific interactions with C-rich determinants within target mRNAs
  • It acts as an important mediator of multiple processes, including replication of viruses with gastrointestinal and hepatic tropism, hepatic collagen synthesis, globin expression, and cellular proliferation
  • PCBP2 is shown to negatively regulate cellular antiviral responses mediated by mitochondrial antiviral-signaling protein (MAVS) signaling and acts as an adapter between MAVS and the E3 ubiquitin ligase ITCH, thereby triggering MAVS ubiquitination and degradation
  • Together with PCBP1, it is shown to function as a translational coactivator of poliovirus RNA via a sequence-specific interaction with stem-loop IV of the IRES, promoting poliovirus RNA replication
  • It has also been implicated in translational control of the 15-lipoxygenase mRNA, human papillomavirus type 16 L2 mRNA, and hepatitis A virus RNA
