- Biglycan is a pericellular matrix proteoglycan structurally related to two other small proteoglycans, decorin and fibromodulin
- Biglycan and decorin are thought to be the result of a gene duplication
- Decorin contains one attached glycosaminoglycan chain, while biglycan contains two chains, and therefore the name biglycan
- Biglycan is involved in collagen fibrils assembly and muscle regeneration
- Biglycan is essential for the assembly of dystrophin-associated protein complex, and interacts with several proteins linked to muscular dystrophy, including alpha-dystroglycan, alpha- and gamma-sarcoglycan and collagen VI
- Biglycan is initially translated as a preproprotein with an N-terminal signal peptide (aa1-19) and propeptide (aa20-37) sequence
- Sequential removal of the signal peptide and the propeptide sequence produces probiglycan and mature biglycan, respectively.
