- Decorin is a pericellular matrix proteoglycan structurally related to two other small proteoglycans, biglycan and fibromodulin
- Decorin and biglycan are thought to be the result of a gene duplication
- Decorin contains one attached glycosaminoglycan chain, while biglycan contains two chains
- Decorin modulates collagen fibril formation as well as the bioactivity of various members of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGFbeta) superfamily
- Decorin is initially translated as a pre-proprotein with an N-terminal signal peptide (aa 1-16) and propeptide (aa 17-30) sequence
- Sequential removal of the signal peptide and the propeptide sequence produces pro- and mature decorin, respectively.
