- Ribophorin I is an ER transmembrane protein and a subunit of the mammalian Oligosaccharyltransferase (OST) complex
- Ribophorin I binds newly synthesized target proteins and delivers them to the catalytic core of the OST complex
- Association of ribophorin I with newly synthesized membrane proteins was observed after the exit of the nascent chain from the Sec61 translocon, and it was unaffected by the N-glycosylation status
- Ribophorin I is reported to preferentially interact with misfolded over native ribonuclease A
- In addition, Ribophorin I is shown to complex with another ER protein malectin and enhance malectin's ability to prevent the secretion of the folding-defective proteins.
