- The biological functions attributed to cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions are mediated primarily by integrin family transmembrane receptors
- A total of 18 alpha and 8 beta integrins have been identified in human
- Each alpha integrin pairs up with one beta integrin non-covalently to form a functional heterodimeric dimer
- At least 24 distinct integrin heterodimers are known with varying ligand specificities
- For example, the alpha6-beta1 integrin is reported to mediate the spreading and laminin-binding of Schwann cells, while the alpha6-beta4 integrin is shown to play a role in the suppression of anoikis in human intestinal epithelial cells (IECs)
