Description

  • General description: Diethylene glycol (DEG) is formed as side reaction product during the esterification reaction of terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol.[1] It readily forms complexes with 3d transition metal cations in the presence of alkaline hydroxide.[2] Its solutions are widely employed for antifreeze and lubricating applications. Oxidative degradation of DEG with ozone by modified Fenton process (mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ferric salt) was described in a study.[3]
  • Application: Diethylene glycol may be used for electrodeposition of cadmium sulfide (CdSe) films.[4] It may be used to compose the fluoride ion electrolytes, for use in the preparation of self-organized titania nanotube arrays.[5]
