Description

• General description: Cholestenoic acid levels in plasma ranges between 100-300 nM and is synthesized in brain.[1] Cholestenoic acid is generated by the side chain oxidation of 27-hydroxy-cholesterol and is an intermediate in the bile synthesis pathway.[2]
• Biochem/physiol Actions: Cholestenoic acid is a carboxylic acid γ-secretase modulator.[1] Cholestenoic acid also serves as a ligand for liver X receptor.[3] Cholestenoic acid -d5 regulates amyloid β peptides (Aβ) levels. It reduces Aβ42 levels and enhances Aβ38 levels.[1] In retina, it is the major byproduct of cholesterol elimination.[4] 27-hydroxycholesterol and cholestenoic acid are part of reverse cholesterol transport in macrophages and their transport impairment is implicated in premature atherosclerosis.[3]
