Description

  • Cultivate anaerobic microorganisms using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ PRAS Chopped Meat Broth
  • R.E
  • Hungate developed the basis for these media, referred to as the roll tube technique
  • The use of a steam sterilized emulsion of a brain tissue in water to support the growth of anaerobic bacilli was first developed by von Hibler 1
  • Henry used the chopped meat broth for cultivating anaerobes and to study their saccharolytic and proteolytic properties 2
  • Recommended by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) 3
  • Cultivate anaerobic microorganisms using Pre-reduced Anaerobically Sterilized (PRAS) Chopped Meat Broth
  • PRAS media are processed in a reduced condition and remain reduced up to and after inoculation 4
  • Ready-to-use – Convenience of a prepared medium
  • Recommended by FDA for use in the enumeration and identification of Clostridium perfringens from food and by the AOAC for the detection of Clostridium botulinum 3
  • Capacity to initiate growth of bacteria from minute inocula and maintain viability of cultures over extended periods of time
  • This medium contains minimal salts, beef heart, peptone, and dextrose which provide reducing substances, amino acids and other nutrients necessary for the growth of anaerobes
  • Solid meat particles create favorable growth conditions for anaerobes due to the reducing action of sulfhydryl groups from muscle protein
  • Cysteine provides sulfahydryl groups which act as reducing agents to bind hydrogen ions and produce anaerobic conditions
  • Vitamin K and hemin are essential for the growth of certain anaerobes, specifically Prevotella melaninogenica
  • A mixed carbohydrate-starch source was developed to provide a carbon source for all anaerobes including those which do not use glucose
  • When glucose or other carbohydrates are incorporated, a growth medium results which is useful in obtaining rapid growth from single colonies for chromatographic analyses, susceptibility testing, or inoculation of different media
  • Not all products are available for sale in all territories

  • Remel™ and Oxoid™ products are now part of the Thermo Scientific brand.
