• General description: 13:0 PC is ditridecanoyl phosphatidyl choline (DTPC).[1] Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a phospholipid, present in endothelial cells, corneal epithelial cells, and fibroblast.[2] Structurally, PC has a polar head consisting of choline and phosphate and two non-polar tails consisting of fatty acids. The polar head group is water soluble and the non-polar tails are water insoluble. Due to its amphiphilic properties, it is present in the cell membrane. In the human body, liver synthesizes PC. Dietary sources of PC are egg and soybeans.[3]
• Application: 13:0 PC (1,2-ditridecanoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) may be used as a lipid standard for the quantification of phosphatidylcholines (PCs) by mass spectrometric analysis.[5][6][6]
• Biochem/physiol Actions: Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is the precursor for the triacylglycerol synthesis. The concentration of PC decreases owing to enhanced triacylglycerol production in the liver. Phosphatidylcholine may be a biomarker for the diagnosis of fatty liver.[7] Its structure enables them to be used in food industry as emulsifiers.[3]
