Description

• Selectively isolate gram-positive cocci using Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Phenylethyl Alcohol Agar (PEA) (Dehydrated)
• Phenylethyl Alcohol Agar was formulated by Lilley and Brewer to isolate gram-positive cocci such as staphylococci and streptococci from specimens containing mixed flora 1
• Phenylethyl alcohol is bacteriostatic and acts on gram-negative bacteria by inhibiting DNA synthesis
• The addition of sheep blood provides many growth factors
• Phenylethyl Alcohol Agar allows the growth of gram-positive organisms and inhibits most gram-negative organisms, especially the swarming of Proteus species
• The medium contains casein peptone which provides nitrogen, carbon, and sulfur nutrients necessary for bacterial growth
• Sodium chloride supplies essential electrolytes and maintains the osmotic equilibrium
• Phenylethyl alcohol inhibits gram-negative organisms by inhibiting DNA synthesis
• Sheep blood is added to the medium to provide many growth factors.
