- ESE-1 (epithelium-specific, EH domain and SH3 domain regulator of endocytosis) contains two N-terminal EH (Ep15 homology) domains, a central coiled-coil domain, and five C-terminal SH3 domains
- ESE-1 is also known as the adaptor protein Intersectin
- Intersectin constitutively associates with Eps15 to form a complex that is analogous to the yeast Pan1p-End3p complex, which is required for endocytosis and organization of the actin cytoskeleton
- The EH, coiled-coil, and SH3 domains of intersectin bind epsin family proteins, SNAP25 and SNAP23, and dynamin, respectively
- Thus, intersectin functions in complex with Eps15 to regulate endocytosis by linking components of the endocytic machinery
