Description
- General description: C12-NBD Sphingomyelin is a fluorescent analog of biologically active molecule, sphingomyelin.[1] Sphingomyelin is predominantly found in the animal plasma membrane. It is abundantly present as component of cell membranes in mammals, nematodes, protozoa.[2]
- Application: C12-NBD-sphingomyelin has been used as a substrate to test substrate specificity of neutral ceramidase orthologue encoded by AsahA gene.[3]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Sphingomyelin (SM) is produced from phosphatidylcholine and ceramide on the cell surface and in lumen of the Golgi. SM′s high packing density and affinity to sterols form a rigid barrier to the extracellular environment. SM is also involved in the formation of lipid rafts in cell membranes, which perform important functions in signal transduction and membrane trafficking.[2]
