- Originally identified as a thymus-leukemia-associated antigen, CD99 is a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on many hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cell types
- CD99 is involved in cellular adhesion and migration as well as in survival
- Antibody-mediated cross-linking of cell surface CD99 is shown to induce apoptotic signals in Jurkat T cells and essential thrombocythemia (ET) cell lines in vitro, and several CD99 monoclonal antibodies show in vivo efficacy in ET mouse models
- CD99 is initially produced with a signal peptide sequence (a.a
- 1-22), the removal of which yields the mature CD99 with a large extracellular domain (a.a
- 23-122), followed by a transmembrane segment (a.a
