- PPIase FKBP4 (FKBP52, FKBP59, p59) is an immunophilin that binds the immunosuppressant drugs FK506 and rapamycin
- FKBP59 was originally identified in the rabbit as a component of the unliganded, nontransformed steroid hormone receptor oligomeric complexes, where it was found associated with the chaperon protein hsp90 involved in protein folding
- All the immunophilins are implicated in protein conformation regulations by catalyzing the cis-trans isomerization of proline imidic peptide bonds via their peptidylprolyl isomerase (rotamase) activity
- FKBP59 is expressed at a higher level in the testis than in other organs
- A high FKBP59 expression occurs in germ cells that have reached the same developmental stages either during prepubertal development or differentiation along the seminiferous tubules in the adult
- The developmental stage-specific expression of FKBP59 during male germ cell differentiation suggests a role during the cell division.
